I’m so proud of Michelle and really want you to hear her story.
Michelle is a talented Dietitian, Gold medallist triathlete and all round lovely person. Her zest for like is an inspiration to me.
When faced with any adversity, but particularly medical diagnoses (in Michelle’s case this was having a stoma fitted due to the damage that Ulcerative Colitis has done to her bowel) it is easy to feel like things in life are now out of reach, especially high level sports.
Michelle was not defeated however and she found the strength to focus her energy towards her sporting goals. Last year she went on to bring home GOLD for GB 🇬🇧 as a Triathlete, a massive achievement for anyone.
We also have a rising star locally who has not let his diagnosis of diabetes slow him down. He works closely with our brilliant diabetes duo Gemma (Dietitian) & Amanda (Nurse) to help manage his condition and go on to achieve sporting excellence.
Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn’s Disease (CD) are Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). CD can affect any part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. As well as GI symptoms someone may experience other complications such as anaemia, rashes and arthritis. UC is usually located in the lower part of the GI tract and can also have other non-GI symptoms including inflammation of the joints, eye and liver.
The severity of the gut inflammation in IBDs can mean that surgery is required to remove that section which sometimes also means that a stoma is also required.
There is good evidence to support specialised liquid diets for newly diagnosed Crohn’s Disease in children and young people. This is often used as a first line treatment before medications like steroids but should only be done under close medical supervision. If you or a family member have been recently diagnosed I suggest that you speak to your Consultant and Dietitian about the best options for you.
