What can I introduce shellfish (mussels on the BBQ for lunch)?

At what age can I give shellfish? This is something that I get asked regularly. The answer is that it’s fine to include properly cooked shellfish as part of the introducing solids (weaning) journey.

Do be aware that shellfish is on the list of common allergens and so if you have a family history of allergy or eczema it’s recommended that you have it as the only bee food that day and don’t introduce anything new again for 3 days so that you can monitor for symptoms.
Allergic reactions can sometimes have a delayed onset and so that why it’s recommended to wait and monitor for a few days.
There’s some research that suggests breastfeeding whilst introducing common allergens such as shellfish can have a protective effect but the jury is still out on this one. The good news is that breastmilk won’t have a detrimental effect and so if you’re able to give breastmilk during that time (does not need to be at the exact same moment!) then that’s got lots if benefits either way.
This is today: When daddy and his friend decide to do lunch properly… BBQ mussels for my girls today whilst I’m at working eating my sandwich 😂
