Research also suggests that a lack of sleep can cause weight gain and that’s not just because when you’re tired you tend to crave higher energy & higher sugar foods and drinks to get you through. It’s thought that a lack of sleep actually affects your appetite hormones!
Did you know that caffeine can stay in your system for up to 14 hours?!
Peaks and troughs in blood glucose (sugar) levels as a result of eating and drinking high sugar things can also result in sleeping problems.
Being overweight can also cause sleep problems such as sleep apnoea (pausing of breathing) and snoring which can significantly affect quality as well as quantity of sleep. Poor sleep quality results in you not feeling refreshed even when you have been asleep. Even a small amount of weight loss can make all the difference if you’re overweight.
It’s thought that most adults feel refreshed after 7-8 hours sleep (on a regular basis).
